Most pregnant people can eat grapefruit with no issue—the exceptions are those taking certain blood pressure medications. Otherwise, grapefruits are an easy way to stay on top of your vitamin C needs without the use of products like Emergen-C or additional supplements.

When it comes to fruit overall, try and opt for the whole fruit itself, whether it’s fresh or frozen, so that you can get all the nutrients it has to offer. Although grapefruit juice still contains many of the same micronutrients, most options are higher in sugar, which can add up over time. If you’re not a huge fan of the taste of grapefruit on its own, try adding some of the fruit to a smoothie or mixing it with a sweeter fruit like pineapple to make it more palatable.

Keep in mind that you may need to stay away from grapefruit if you’ve been diagnosed with preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is a type of high blood pressure that can happen during pregnancy, and it may need to be managed with medications that interact with grapefruit. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you’re taking blood pressure medication and are unsure if this restriction applies to you.
