Scallops are a mollusk that serve as a very low-mercury source of protein. They have a meaty texture that tends to be complementary to salads and risotto, among other dishes. The only thing that may change when eating scallops during pregnancy is perhaps applying a little bit more caution to the cook.

During pregnancy, it’s really important to make sure that the animal proteins you’re eating are thoroughly cooked in order to ward off the food safety concerns. This concern increases during pregnancy because the strength of your immune system is lower than usual, making you more susceptible to a worse case of food poisoning. So sear your scallops for a tiny bit longer to ensure they are cooked through, and you should be good to go.
