Semaglutide (generic for Ozempic and Wegovy) has been shown to increase the risk of birth defects in animal models, so it’s not recommended in pregnancy.

Ozempic and Wegovy are both brand names for semaglutide, a medication designed to be used for type 2 diabetes. Prescriptions for both medications have increased markedly in the past few years as weight loss medications, as this is a common side effect of semaglutide. Wegovy is approved specifically for weight loss, and Ozempic is approved for diabetes, but they are both semaglutide.

Human data are lacking, but until safety in pregnancy has been established, these medications should not be taken in pregnancy. It’s important to note that there are many other medications for diabetes that are safe to take while pregnant.
