If your pregnancy coincides with the holiday season, you’ll be pleased to know that you don’t necessarily have to pass up on the eggnog at parties or family gatherings this Christmas. It all depends on where the eggnog is from—was it bought at the grocery store or did your uncle make his special recipe?

Most store-bought eggnogs will be pasteurized, meaning that they were heated to a certain temperature to kill off any bad bacteria, like salmonella, which can be harmful during pregnancy. If you’re making homemade eggnog that involves the use of raw eggs, however, there’s a greater risk of food poisoning.

So, if you're going to have a glass this year, double check that it's store-bought and non-alcoholic.
