Since chai falls in the category of caffeinated teas (rather than herbal teas), we can say confidently that it’s a suitable drink to consume during pregnancy. This is because there’s been far more research on the intake of caffeine during pregnancy than there has been on the consumption of herbal beverages during pregnancy. Although guidelines can vary from country to country, consumption of no more than 200-300 milligrams of caffeine per day is recommended for pregnant people.

The caffeine content of chai can vary depending on if you’re using a tea bag, loose leaf tea or a concentrate, but it generally contains no more than half the amount of caffeine found in a standard cup of coffee. For this reason, chai lovers can easily get away with consuming a solid two or three cups a day during pregnancy—possibly even more than that.
