Urinary tract infections (UTIs) provide plenty of misery whether you’re pregnant or not. AZO (phenazopyridine 1 ) is the only over-the-counter medication sold to treat UTIs, and many people swear by it. AZO is not an antibiotic 2 , so it won’t kill your infection, but it does work to treat all the uncomfortable symptoms that you experience during a UTI.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reports no animal studies have shown whether phenazopyridine is harmful to fetal development, but it also has no human studies to show that it's safe.
It’s also worth noting that the FDA has not approved AZO for the over-the-counter treatment of UTIs. But if you’re coping with a urinary infection and want to try it, you should talk it over with your healthcare provider and see if it might be a good option for you.
